LOL! those answers are AWFUL!
that's not even hedging anymore, that's just cringeworthy. can't say I'm surprised though - physically idealized humans seem to be the aimed for aesthetic in GW. I was kinda hoping to see make-up sliders implemented still, but it seems that's off limits just like old faces or small breasts.

on that note - isn't it odd how all character customization in MMOs is about symmetry? even with facial sliders, I cannot recall any game that ever featured asymmetric options. can you?
why can't you make a crooked nose that's aiming to the left side of the face? or one smaller and one bigger eye? we know that classic facial beauty is a lot about symmetry; while very memorable and charismatic faces tend to deviate from symmetry. especially in an RPG environment you could think this would be a very popular feature. how hard can it be to implement?

Long time reader, first time commenter, and shamefully late adding you to my blog roll (I really had no idea I hadn't already posted you--cleaned and corrected).

I think I've decided recently to not spend money on games which don't have enough Dare. Too much idealism in games actually ruins the fantasy of it, but I don't think designers are aware. Or they just don't have enough Dare.

Guild Wars 2 definitely gets a pass. It's very clear that, overall, they really *are* striving toward diversity, striving to challenge dimorphism. They may not get it perfectly right, but none of us do. The point is the try. The point is to dare.

Nice post. I find the lack of age options irritating. I'm in my late 30s, and I like my characters to look a little older but it seems like the only setting for Human faces is "dewy". I'm trying to be grizzled and badass, dammit.

Honestly I'm excited for GW2 completely in spite of the appearance options for women characters, from make-up to armor. The only saving grace I've seen thus far is the fact that female Charr body model is great and doesn't have giant furry cleavage.

Several months back at one of the gameshow demos, I remember someone asking a dev if there would be any face option without makeup and the dev seemed surprised that anyone would even ask for that. I thought it was kind of weird that apparently the topic had never been brought up or considered internally.

It does look a little odd that every human female face has makeup (and the exact same style of it, too) except one face that I think that has a less pink lipstick shade. To be honest neither the Norn or Human women faces appeal to me at all -- which is fine since I was always planning to main a Charr female anyway.

Human females are also really thin and hourglass-y too, with no option for an actual 'athletic' body type.
