So the pre-orders for Guild Wars 2 will open on April 10th. So soon that I can almost smell the Charr fur of my first character. GW2 is coming in three main version, two digital and one Collector’s Edition. Doubtless a disc edition will be available through retailers like amazon, closer to the date.
Digital Edition Standard
This version comes with:
- The game (you’d kinda hope)
- 3 days of headstart (seems kinda….short, to me.)
- Access to beta events
- Hero’s Band (an item that gives pluses to various character stats)
Digital Deluxe Edition
All of the above plus
- Summon Mistfire Wolf Elite Skill (A pet that can be summoned for battle)
- Rytlock Miniature (A companion pet)
- Golem Banker (This only lasts 5 days)
- Chalice of Glory (A boost to your initial PvP)
- Tome of Influence (A boost to a guild of your choosing)
Collector’s Edition
- 10-inch figurine of Rytlock (This does look extremely awesome)
- 112 page Making of Guild Wars 2 book (The art associated with this game is stunning)
- Custom Art Frame (Er, yay?)
- Art Portfolio and Five Art Prints (See above comment about stunning art.)
- Best of Guild Wars 2 Soundtrack CD (Music is always good.)
And a whopping price
We don’t know the pricing scheme for the digital editions, but the CE price tag in the UK currently stands at a whopping £130. Ouch. That’s the sort of pricing that stopped me going for the Star Wars: The Old Republic CE, another highly priced premium item. It’s a little worrying that this is going to be seen as the new standard for Collector’s Editions in the MMO industry, especially when Warcraft CE’s have been of reasonably good quality and also managed to be reasonably affordable.
Is it worth the money?
I’m not sure that the digital boosts are worth it – the Golem Banker would be be worth the money if it wasn’t only for 5 days, in my opinion. These digital bonuses are designed to boost only the early levels of play, rather than enhance your experience in the long term (which is fair enough given the aversion to F2P business models that ArenaNet seem to have.) The Mistfire Wolf, well I can’t see that it would very powerful in the long run.
The figurine, art prints, book and sound track need to be worth £60 on their own. However unlike other recent MMO releases there is no subscription to pay for once you’ve paid the box price, so in some ways it’s easier to accept a more expensive box price than it would be from World of Warcraft expansions. Or I will keep telling myself that to justify the purchase I know I’m going to end up making. I’ll close my eyes to the fact that Warcraft gets cheaper to ‘purchase’ all the time, as the expansions can be had for less than a tenner depending on the latest offers.
The art and figurine are absolutely beautiful. For me one of the huge draws of Guild Wars 2 has been the aesthetics created by the creative team, as well as a world that seems to have much more depth of lore than many equivalent MMOs.
Digital downloads and early access
As someone living in rural England, the early access for SW:TOR was practically over by the time I had gotten the game downloaded. 3 days seems incredibly short from my perspective, and even for the general populace.

I’m so torn. I am not going to buy the CE. It’s too much money, even if I’m a sucker for art books. I think I’ll give it a few more weeks before I decide if I really want to play this game. It all looks so great, but I am just not sure if it will really draw me in when it comes to questing…

Pewter
The only thing that keeps me keen on it is the enthusiasm that people I trust combined with what I know about the game, otherwise I wouldn’t consider it.

Having waited just 4 weeks after launch to pick up the SWTOR: CE, it’s seems that GAME (shop) decided to drop the ridiculous price tag of £130, and I was able to purchase it for just £49.99 which seemed like a bargain, until you realized what you actually got inside.
Talk about a massive rip off!
You got the statue, you got no art book or making of concept art or story or any of that kind of thing.
Instead what you got, as mentioned was a statue, a 117 page book that contained nothing but spelling mistakes all over the place.
You also got a music CD of the game.
And the most stupid thing of all? They gave you some digital items for in game, that for me where unjustifiable to say the least. I was more interested in the amor you could get in game..when i went to the collectors edition store…i discovered you actually had to pay in game currency to get the said items that you had already paid for in game…as for exclusive items in game…everything you got digitally in the CE edition you could buy in game 0.o Those who thought about buying this CE and did not dodged a very big / nasty bullet, because as CE editions go, for me this was the worst of the lot.
In actual fact regarding this game GW2 it did not come as any surprise at all, that NC Soft would attempt a market rip off with the price of the game (49.99 standard edition) and £64.99 for the deluxe edition.
You wouldn’t believe the amount of MMO’s I have bought in the last 5 or so years and the wasted amounts I spent on nothing but garbage.
Here is what I see, the model for most MMO’s these days is F2P simply because you can make far more than you can in subscriptions…with subscriptions you have to be fanciful with the numbers to make it appear more people are playing than there really are. Blizzard are professional liars when it comes to made up numbers, I should know, having noticed one of the biggest ever drop off’s of players in the past 6 or 7 years.
How they can justify even selling this game, when you can jump into and play other free MMO’s that require nothing to pay…unless you want to buy in game micro transactions..but then we are going to have to pay for in game micro transactions…in GW 2, forgive me if i seem very cautious when it comes to this model where they claim nothing game breaking…every F2P mmo claims exactly the same thing…and I simply cannot see Arena Net ever sticking to something like that…the store is there to buy things, it makes them a profit, while selling things that don’t actually do anything for you (game wise, ie boosts etc) believe me, they will end up selling game breaking things sooner than most think.
As for the price tag..I bought every CE editions of the original GW, and nothing at all can justify the ridiculous price tag’s associated with this game..even for standard edition £50 is absolutely ridiculous..yet another example of a good company gone to hell.
They should reduce the price , and if they are that desperate, open up subscriptions..if it doesn’t work then go back to F2P they will win either way…but the price is a joke and one I am not willing to take a risk on…bought to many MMO’s and all of them are sitting on a shelf somewhere, probably never to see the light of day again. Once bitten twice shy and this case…unless they significantly lower the price, this is one player they won’t be seeing in the new world…
I think computer game shops will be the best bet…i can guarantee there won’t be one willing to charge that the ridiculous price for a standard edition…not if they want to shift units..free or not, this game is a massive rip off and id advice staying away from it, and looking at Tera or some new up coming title.
