I’ve not been able to post partly because the response to the monster post has been somewhat overwhelming. I’ve learned quite a lot, I’ve been told things I already knew a lot, as if I should be surprised that the ‘world is dominated by men and therefore they are going to market to men because that is what sells.’*
Also the idea that I go around looking for things to be offended by is kinda old. I don’t do that. I spend most of my time playing and ignoring the nekkid elf on the mail box. However I’m also observant and if I notice something and want to talk about it, I will.
Pewter in Beta
I was going to do videos! And fabulous screenshot posts! And analysis of how well Unleashed Weapon functions! And then the Sexism post kind of got a lot of attention and I started playing Beta to have fun. So far I have arsed around in the Goblin and Worgen starter areas, and levelled my main to 81 in Vashj’ir. I am not good with flying sims in general, and swimming in Azeroth has always been a headache, but I think Blizzard have done a fabulous job with Vashj’ir. The underwater mount doesn’t feel awkward, and the depths and heights don’t feel too bewildering. The initial starting sub-zone has some really fun quests, although I can see some gamers who have better reflexes than me being bored to tears IF they aren’t engaged by the storyline or entranced by the underwater fantasy land that Blizz have created.
So far I am not enjoying the Lava Surge mechanic. It comes into it’s own on mobs that live longer, but spending all my time watching for that proc and trying to keep track of Flame Shock and Unleash Elements with the base UI is kind of not that fun while questing. I find myself wasting those procs, and the timing of Unleash Elements I shall have to reserve judgement on until I actually get into a dungeon. I also wonder whether my gear is really….correct because even with totems my spells feel underpowered. I’ve deliberated started replacing some of my gear with greens in order to get some Mastery Rating, but I might just switch back to my purples.
Temporary Short Cuts
I did make the mistake of going to Vashj’ir and then hearthing out. If you have a 310% mount you can fly back to the zone from the mainland, but as an Alliance character I can’t find any easy teleports (that work, and continue to work after you’ve been to the zone for the first time) and the flightpath that connects the zone to Ironforge seems to be only one way. I’ve now moved on the Mount Hyjal, although I’m facing the same issue. I guess I might actually have to take a portal from Darnassus and travel there in a more traditional way! It’s funny, with the changes to levelling and LFD I’ve gotten so used to instant travel that the idea of getting to a zone the old fashioned way because I left to train seems strange and alien. My Vanilla self is probably cackling loudly somewhere.
Creepy Clones vs Irreverent Nasty
I started the Worgen and Goblin starter areas. Of the two, the Goblins were light hearted and silly but I don’t really care about them at all. They’re nasty and ruthless, and literally everything is a bad pun or a joke, so they are nasty, ruthless and trivial and I just don’t care about them enough to want to know what happens. Of course, my Goblin is only level 5 at the moment, but I just didn’t find myself sucked into the story in the same way that Vashj’ir sucks me in. This is not to say that the Goblin zone and story isn’t appealling, it just doesn’t appeal to me personally in the same way that the Worgen zone des.
The Worgen starting area is beautiful. I love the atmosphere, and I can’t wait to see the polished, live version. As a zone it feels much more linear so far – the Goblin starter zone definitely has a dynamic feeling to it, while the Worgen Zone is much more like a graphic novel or a movie. I like the British accents, except for the female voice actor who sounds very Dick Van Dyke – the mockney accent is very grating and I ended up paying attention to her voice instead of what she was saying. It sounded wrong. Currently you can’t change the look of your worgen, so every player character is a bald male with a beard, and once they start congregating it definitely starts to look like Attack of the Creepy Clones.
I think both starting zones are a lot of fun, and they definitely put the old world zones to shame. This worries me, because I know a few people who trial the game via Vanilla. My experiences in the Dwarven starting zone were very lacklustre (although better than the ‘live’ version) and it’s these original races that new players will initially start with, rather than Draenei, Blood Elves, Goblins or Worgen. I think if Blizzard wants to retain more players from the trial, they need to put much more work into making these original race zones compelling (please note that I haven’t played with the other revised starting zones yet.)
So why no beta videos Pewter?
Uh. I kind got distracted.
What. I HAD to make a gif out of it. It’s from the Worgen starting zone. I was innocently questing, trying to find a child and tell her to run to her mother, and I turned around and there was a giant pot of worms that twitched in fascinating ways.
* And as if it should come as a surprise to me that the Worgen female jokes are funny because they are puns on being a dog! If you can’t see that part of the humour in them is misogynist I don’t really know what else I can say about that (and no this is not the right post to tell me I’m wrong.)

I’d love to be in the Beta, but seems Blizzard hates me, so no luck so far!
Those worms are.. disturbing.
About the worgen female jokes. Yes, it’s about her being a dog – and it wouldn’t have bothered me if some of the jokes would have gone to the male as well. As it stands, all of the domesticated/submissive ones are with the female. I think the housebroken joke would have worked just as well for the male, and then I’d have been fine with it since it would clearly be jokes for the race. As it stands, it’s the female saying them all – and it falls flat.

I have to say, from a Horde standpoint, that many of us are more excited about the Worgen, than we are the Goblins. I think in most cases where I’ve heard a Horde friend say they wanted to be a Goblin, it’s usually in jest or in an alt capacity. I have yet to hear someone say that they are serious about becoming a Goblin main or anything like that.
And while I don’t plan on leaving my new guild anytime soon (though I’m still a Trial and they could easily get rid of me), I have to say that being a Worgen does make a faction change more appealing and would broaden my horizons – in terms of new guilds. I really can’t get over the concept of being a Night Elf. This would make it much more desirable.
I’d still roll a Worgen… something, mind you – lol
I’m also excited about Dwarven warlocks. More than I should be!

Yeah. I wish the worgen could be shaman, but I’m taking the opportunity to level as a druid. I am trying to decide between boomkin and kitty at the moment! I might also try a Worgen hunter.
DWARVES FTW

I’ve always wanted a goblin since I first started playing. Too bad they’ve taken so long to be introduced that I have no plans to race change any of my characters into one.

Those worms are just awesome!
Also – can you confirm that if you have a 310 mount you can fly immediately, but if you do not have a 310 mount you must wait? Is that right? Seems odd to me, but one of the guys in our guild keeps commenting on it. If that is correct, at what level do you get to acquire a 310 mount/training if you do not have a WotLK 310 flyer? Is it level restricted? What is the cost of training if so? (Is this an odd Beta question?!).

I saw plenty of people on 280 flying mounts in and around Azeroth. If your guildie went straight to Vashj’ir then he wouldn’t have been able to use his flying mount there anyway.
It’s not an odd beta question, but as my character has 310% already I can’t confirm if there is anywhere available to train it yet. I shall keep an eye out the next time I log into beta.

After the initial boat-to-Vashjir event, you should be able to talk to the teleportation NPC in Stormwind to be taken to the sunken boat in Vashjir.
The same teleportation NPC also allows you to go to Mount Hyjal repeatedly, but you should also be able to fly/run there from Winterspring.
It could be that the new patch screwed up things a bit, though – I’ve two characters stuck in the (fictional) Nether at the moment because I started playing when my launcher was yellow and took portals. The loading screens freeze for both characters

Where is this mythical teleportation NPC though, I couldn’t find it! Although to be honest it was no great loss having to do a bit of flying on my rusted proto drake

I looked in the mage quarters, I looked by the original quest givers, I looked near the king, but ‘Bank/AH’ as travel hub did not occur to me

I am surprised to find myself in the minority (at least from the reactions in this post) but I have really been enjoying the goblin starting zone!! I made a female mage who is sassy and cute and spunky. I love her voice and her emotes to the extent that I did not turn them off – something I have done one every single other toon I have. Unfortunately I`m on a dialup computer right now or I`d do some image searching to confirm, but I definitely think she has a bit of a pooch! I was trying on some belly-baring vendor gear and it looks like there is a little shadow around her waistline that suggests a little belly poking out.
Model aside, the quests are snarky, steampunky, and fun. I love the fact that I have minions who call me boss (although it is extremely weird that every single player will be filling this role from an RP standpoint), a super awesome car, lots of gadgets and explosives, and a cool estate. The zone itself is fascinating, and I find myself strangely drawn to driving only on the roads (lol idk). Also you can hit people with your car. Gallywix (sp?) is a total turdbasket, but I`m trying to see his actions from the goblin culture point of view to see if it`s understandable in that context. Since I`m not very far along in that line of thinking, I still think he is a douchenozzle and the player-created Trade Princess would have been so damn awesome >:C
The second island after the immediate starting zone has quests slightly more hilarious and ridiculous than the first, what with monkeys, explosives, and a weed whacker on my belt. For whatever reason the humor and attitudes of the goblins really appeal to me…most likely because I am a snarky bitch
I`m only level 8 at the moment (also I haven`t yet done the much-commented on problematic Kill Your Cheating Boyfriend quest so can`t say my reaction to that) and I`m torn between wanting to see everything and wanting to keep it fresh and new when I finally buy it, but so far I feel confident in saying that my extreme enjoyment of the goblin starting zone is not just based on its newness but also on the care that went into the story line and zone aesthetics.
(apologies if you get like 5 of this post, the CAPTCHA thing is giving me errors left and right)

I think you’re with the majority in the wider ‘wow world’ as far as preferring the Goblin starting area. I think it is more dynamic and fun, and it helps that you can already customise the Goblin models and run around as a character that you’ve chosen. It’s a really imaginative starting area and Blizz have done a great job with it, I just don’t want to play in it that much.
Don’t get me wrong, I adore steampunk, but the place is so dirty and grimy and oily that I feel uncomfortable playing there for too long xD Probably says more about me than about the area. It was very noisy and busy and not for me I guess, but then I’m a fan of paranormal/gothic/horror aesthetics as well, and I love the worgen in general. Goblins for me are a bit like the plaguewing in ICC – comedy with a sinister edge. I prefer Lower Spire/Frost Wing/Crimson Halls to Plague Qing for that reason, I’d prefer sinister with a slight comedy touch
I haven’t done the problematic quest either. In the grand scheme of ‘violent things to do in video games’ it isn’t that much of a deal, but I think it’s interesting that there is discussion about it rather than it simply being affected, and it’s good that people realise how heteronormative it is. These are quests that presume things about the sexuality and general inclinations of the player character, which I don’t think is a line I’ve seen crossed before.
